Historic dispersal barriers determine genetic structure and connectivity in a sandy beach brooder

چکیده

The supralittoral zones of sandy beaches are particularly vulnerable to coastal development and other activities that cause localised habitat destruction. Supratidal species, such as peracarid crustaceans, which lack a pelagic larval phase tend avoid direct contact with the swash, therefore expected be distributed isolated populations, implications for their long-term survival. Genetic population structure one pill bug Tylos capensis , was investigated based on mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) haplotype sequences, assess demographic history regional connectivity in presence potential dispersal barriers (an estuary, cliffs) along Indian Ocean coast South Africa. Here, bugs demonstrated strong significant genetic at scale, 3 distinct clades across species’ geographic distribution. At spatial cliffs intersecting high shore appeared barrier gene flow between adjacent while permanently open estuary did not limit flow. While among low-dispersing populations is unlikely benefit from network closely spaced protected areas, nature this coupled cryptic diversity inherent taxon, emphasizes need protection. importance protecting intact littoral active zone highlighted.

Community Structure and Biodiversity of Intertidal Sandy Beach Macrofauna in Chabahar Bay, Northeast of Oman Gulf, IR Iran

Biodiversity and community structure of macrofauna of the intertidal sandy beach at Chabahar Bay were studied for a period of ten months in 2007. A total of 32 species were observed and identified in this study so that polychaete with 16 species was numerically dominant. The results showed changing densities were influenced by monsoon season so that maximum density (1935.47 ind/m2) was observed...

Global diversity patterns in sandy beach macrofauna: a biogeographic analysis

Unlike the advances generated on land, the knowledge of global diversity patterns in marine ecosystems is limited to a small number of studies. For sandy beaches, which dominate the world's ocean shores, previous meta-analyses highlighted the role of beach morphodynamics in explaining species richness patterns. Oceanographic variables and historical processes have not been considered, even thou...

Population connectivity of the corallivorous gastropod Coralliophila abbreviata: larval dispersal potential and genetic structure

Coralliophila abbreviata (Lamarck) is a coral-eating gastropod found throughout the Caribbean and Western Atlantic. These snails cause substantial and chronic mortality of the two ESA listed ‘Threatened’ scleractinian coral species, Acropora palmata and A. cervicornis. The objectives of this project were to 1) determine the species status of Coralliophila abbreviata 2) estimate the dispersal po...

Golden opportunities: A horizon scan to expand sandy beach ecology

Robust ecological paradigms and theories should, ideally, hold across several ecosystems. Yet, limited testing of generalities has occurred in some habitats despite these habitats offering unique features to make them good model systems for experiments. We contend this is the case for the ocean-exposed sandy beaches. Beaches have several distinctive traits, including extreme malleability of hab...

Correction: Environmental Control on Fish and Macrocrustacean Spring Community-Structure, on an Intertidal Sandy Beach

The inter-annual variability of the fish and macrocrustacean spring community on an intertidal sandy beach near the Canche estuary (North of France) was studied from 2000 to 2013 based on weekly spring sampling over an 11-year period. Twenty-eight species representing 21 families were collected during the course of the study. The community was dominated by a few abundant species accounting for ...
